10 things...
Ok, that silly 10 things meme. Here we go - 10 things I have done that you probably haven't.
1) I have proven one of Alan Turing's theories* wrong - 3 times. My logic lecturer wasn't convinced the first two times, so I did it again.
2) I created and ran my city's largest BBS (by posting volume). By virtue of the organisational nature of this BBS (a thearchy), I became a "small god" by the Pratchett definition, and even have a signed copy of Small Gods to prove it. The inscription reads "To Shub Sethop. You rule because they believe. Terry Pratchett".
3) I have been proficient in the little known, labyrinthine but very powerful middleware system "Webhub" written for the Delphi language by href.com. Using it I wrote an enterprise level multi-level catalogue application, and my own Web BBS system (which was better than most other web BBS systems out there in several ways, but it never really took off).
4) Before giving up computer games, I defeated Doom in Nightmare mode, and scored over 250% at Emperor level Civilisation. But the most impressive thing is that I managed to give up computer games. By comparison, giving up TV was a doddle.
5) I have directed 3 different NZ registered companies, tho not very well it has to be said...I keep getting sidetracked by bigger and better things. My _4th_ company will be vastly more successful, I promise.
6) I have been taken as tribute by an invading Baroness after her forces defeated ours in battle. I served on her Baronial guard, and fought for her in a Coronet tourney.
7) I have lived in a hotel for over a year - I was their IT guy, I gave them 7hrs a week for accommodation and office space.
8) I have played club level backgammon for $5 / point, once winning over $50 in a single game. I also briefly acheived a 1700 rating on FIBS back when that was moderately impressive.
9) I wrote one of the worlds first desktop generated weblog systems, back before they were called weblog systems. It still powers scitechdaily.com unless SPIS have switched to something else.
10) More recently, I have invented a new user interface element. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what it is. But you'll see in a couple of months. Unless you sign an NDA, then you'll see it sooner.
* Although it has to be said it wasn't a theory he ever published, just a random musing on how you could string NAND gates together into what looked an awful lot like primitive neural nets. The problem was that as he'd described them, the things didn't actually work. This isn't a theory like relativity or darwinian evolution we're talking about, it's more of a harebrained scheme sort of theory, something he dreamed up while on sabbatical.
